The most obvious signs of stress to look out for

Some studies have shown that around 33% of adults experience high levels of stress at one point or another in their lifetimes. It seems as though longer working hours, the rise of technology, and never being able to switch off are all playing havoc with our bodies and minds. If you’re worried that you might be stressed, then these are the most obvious signs you need to keep an eye out for.

Headaches

One of the most significant physical signs of stress is a rise in the number of headaches you might experience. If you find yourself reaching for the painkillers more often, then it might be because you are stressed. Several studies have shown that those with chronic headaches are far more likely to experience them just after a stressful event. Stress can also contribute to people getting more headaches in a given period. If you’re experiencing more headaches than usual, it could be related to stress.

Getting ill

It is believed that stress can really impact your immune system, making you more susceptible to the common cold or flu. Those who are often stressed may find themselves needing to take sick days more often. Unfortunately, this then becomes a vicious cycle where you stress out about being off work – thus making you sick again. Make sure you take enough time to rest so that you’re not constantly battling the sniffles. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Decrease in energy levels

Do you feel exhausted, all of the time? Those who suffer with prolonged stress may find that it causes issues such as chronic fatigue and a decrease in energy levels. However, stress can also cause sleep conditions such as insomnia which may contribute to that constant feeling of tiredness. If you find yourself struggling to get to sleep, or always feel like you could have a nap at your desk, it may be that you’re stressed out. It may be time to talk to a doctor about getting a better night’s rest.

Acne

Believe it or not, but acne is actually one of the most visible signs of stress. When people are feeling stressed, they tend to touch their faces more often than those who aren’t stressed. This then spread dust, dirt, and oil – along with bacteria – which can lead to breakouts of acne. There have been several studies that correlate higher levels of stress with acne.

Feeling stressed

It may sound obvious, but the most significant sign of stress is feeling stressed! We are quite intuitive, and so we know if something is not right with our minds. If you have deadlines looming, an exam coming up, or too much on your plate at work, then you’ll probably find yourself feeling stressed out. It might be time to take a step back and work out if you can cut some of that stress from your life. Plus, if you have a combination of any of the above symptoms, then there is a good chance you may need to see a doctor.

Stress is actually a very dangerous condition and should definitely be taken seriously. If you feel as though you may be stressed, talk to a doctor about what can be done. Mindfulness and meditation, plus talking therapies, can all help alleviate stress. Whatever you do, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s no weakness in being stressed!
