Tiny apartments are becoming more and more popular, and it seems as though it pays to be thinking smaller rather than bigger. After all, living in a big city is never cheap, and it’s important to make sure that you’re living beyond your means. Can you realistically afford a huge apartment? Do you need such a huge amount of space? What happens if size overtakes location? People who want to live right in the hustle and bustle often have to make a few sacrifices in terms of size, and one YouTuber has set up shop in a tiny 8m2 Tokyo apartment…

Who is she?

The woman in question is a YouTuber by the name of Emma or Tokidoki Traveller. This Aussie native moved her life across the globe to set up shop in Tokyo, and she has since found a home to suit all of her needs. However, this isn’t your average apartment. She lives in an 8m2 apartment that is just about big enough to house all of her belongings and make a cozy living space. She films and uploads a huge number of her videos from this apartment, and it’s safe to say that her 213,000+ subscribers have enjoyed going along for the ride.

Why does she live in such a small apartment?

Emma always knew that she wanted to make her way to Tokyo, as she has always been fascinated by the Japanese culture. She eventually found her way to the city she had always dreamed of, but she struggled to find somewhere to live. Traditionally, apartments in Tokyo are all on one-level and extremely small. Although she knew that she would have to scrimp on size, she also wanted to make sure that she didn’t feel claustrophobic. In the end, she was able to find an apartment that offered a small amount of size but was split across two levels rather than one. This was the selling point for her, and she was sold.

What does the apartment offer?

Because the apartment is split across two floors, Emma has the pleasure of splitting her living space up. On the ground floor, there is a long alleyway that comes complete with a hidden closet, cabinets for her crockery and other belongings, a table and chair where she does her work, a sink and small kitchen area, and even a balcony. To one side of this alleyway is also a small bathroom complete with toilet and shower. Located in the middle of the alleyway is a ladder which takes Emma up to her sleeping quarters, where there is a bed and more space for storage.

For cheaper rent, you can live in a smaller apartment and one that is more confined. However, these apartments do also house everything you could need.
