Things that you might do in your sleep

We spend one-third of our lives sleeping, and it’s essential to get as much rest as possible. Scientists know a fair amount about sleep, but there is a lot they are yet to discover, and they still don’t know why we need so much of it! You see, sleep is such a curious thing, because we don’t really know what happens when we’re asleep. All we know is that getting a good amount of uninterrupted sleep leaves you refreshed and stronger.

Sleep is actually a fairly busy time for your body, and we aren’t just talking about when you dream. There are actually quite a few things that you wind up doing in your sleep that you probably aren’t even aware of. These are some of the amazing things you and your body will do in your sleep, without even realizing it!

Grinding your teeth

The majority of us actually grind our teeth when we are asleep, and we don’t even know we’re doing it. This can be caused by a lot of different things, for example, psychological and emotional states. This can cause unusual wear to your teeth, and might cause further problems later down the line. This is one of the reasons why people find themselves having to go to the dentist, as well as experiencing problems with your teeth. The dentist will be able to provide you with a mouth guard if you are grinding your teeth too much.

Keeping time

The idea of our bodies keeping time when we are asleep is not a new idea, but it is certainly something that’s well-founded. See, while you sleep, your hypothalamus is still active and mapping out your body’s circadian rhythm. This is how you know when you’re tired and you need to turn in, as well as instinctively knowing when you should be waking up. This is also why your body can sometimes feel exhausted if you haven’t had the right amount of sleep.

Losing weight!

Believe it or not, when you sleep you can actually burn calories and shed pounds! While you are asleep, your body is often still hard at work, and you actually lose about a pound a night. This is done via the water vapor you expel when breathing. So, make sure you try to sleep as much as you can (as if we need an excuse). Not only will you feel refreshed and well rested, but you are also going to find that you can lose weight as a result of this!

Sleep talking

We all know that some people go sleepwalking from time to time during the night, but, did you know that sleep talking is also a thing?! About five percent of adults talk in their sleep – something that is more common among men and kids. There are a number of factors that can cause people to talk in their sleep, but, if you find yourself doing it, don’t worry. It’s a harmless enough activity – it might just be a little bit annoying for other people!

When we are asleep our bodies and minds are doing so many different things that we might not be aware of. It’s pretty incredible how many different things we actually wind up doing while we’re asleep, and you probably have no idea about a lot of them. This is a list of just some of the key things we do in our sleep, and there are plenty more as well.
