A rare look inside these abandoned military bases and submarines

Around the 1900s, submarine technology was first being used by Naval forces including the U.S., German, and British militaries. Many of the submarines used in the past, however, have since been abandoned in favor of newer technology, and the bases they were deployed from have also been left behind by the military in several countries.

The military likes to keep their bases and submarines a closely guarded secret, but some of the world’s most curious explorers have found a way to access those which have been abandoned…

This military base is one of the most remote in the world, it is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The site used to be a bird refuge, but soon it was a major part of the American military’s operations, including refueling and repair work.

Johnston Atoll

It first was under the control of the military in 1935 and in 1941 an airfield was added to the base. It was heavily bombarded by a Japanese submarine during WWII, and the civilians who worked there were replaced by military personnel. The U.S. Air Force currently controls it, but it is expected to revert back to a wildlife refuge in the future.
