When looking for a profession to make a career, most people look at its relevance in the days to come. The more relevant it is, the better chances for a good life. With all the technological advancements happening left right and centre, there have been many professions that have faded to oblivion over time as machines and computers take over from human hands and minds.
A recent trend however indicates that some of the professions that were abandoned decades ago are slowly making a comeback. There are people who still need the services that the professionals in these fields provided, and which aren’t exactly available in the mainstream. Some of these professions may seem odd and strange, but the fact that there are job listings for them show how relevant they are. What makes it easier to make a living from them is the fact that not many people are practicing them, so the few who choose to go the old fashioned way get all the traffic. Let’s look at some of the almost forgotten professions that will make a comeback.
Shoemaker
A shoemaker is a person who makes shoes by hand from scratch. Before machines and multinational shoe designing and making companies, all shoes used to be made by hand. Tedious, right? You might wonder why anyone would want to do that for a living. Well, handmade shoes are considered to be luxurious, and they’re also of better quality than machine stitched shoes. Famous people do not mind paying thousands of dollars to a shoemaker in order to get their shoes custom made. It’s picking up and very soon it’s going to be mainstream.
Knife grinders
In the olden days, every little household need had an expert for it. Blunt kitchen and garden items are the bane of every household worker, and back then there used to be knife grinders who would go round neighborhoods sharpening these tools. This profession is making a comeback, too. Not many modern homes have sharpening supplies at their disposal and most have to put up with blunt knives or keep buying new ones. The sharpeners are back, this time in trucks and bicycles, going wherever there are cutting tools to sharpen and making a fortune out of it.
Chimney sweep
Just the mention of this brings into mind a young Victorian boy with blackened cheeks covered with soot. Back in Victorian England, as can be seen in literature of that time such as Dickens’s works, chimney sweeping used to be a lucrative business. The profession is rising from the ashes, pun intended, thanks to the fact that there are actual job listings for chimney sweepers. So far, not many are enthusiastic about the idea of crawling around chimneys all day and going back home covered in soot. That’s why the few who are already sweeping the chimneys have many job opportunities at the moment.
Carpenter
Machines and computers can’t do everything, and neither can we. Those wishing to make some repairs or add some elements to the upholstery in their homes have been finding carpenters useful. The need for carpenters to come in and provide services such as shelving is one that’s on the rise and this is a profession that’s definitely making a comeback.
