As the only male character, Roland is an honorary “Army Wife” and the others welcome him into their tribe as one of their own; they often seek his help with their problems. He is married to Joan and used to work as a psychiatrist on the base.
He later moved to a private clinic away from the base to treat patients suffering PTSD – his marriage suffered while his wife was going through this. Eventually Roland and Joan work things out and have two children together.
