Denise is the classic military brat, who mentioned early on in the show that she had moved 14 times in 23 years. Army life is really all she knows because she grew up with her father being in the military, and she falls in love with and marries a military man as well.
In the beginning of the series, Denise is more closed off and withdrawn because she is being abused by her son, but she later opens up a bit and finds her strength from within.
