It’s not easy to grow on on the tough streets in Chicago’s South Side, but Joan Burton was able to handle it and wound up just fine. Burton overcame a complicated childhood and eventually became a high ranking soldier in the Army.
Burton has had many different deployments around the world, including an especially difficult one in Afghanistan that caused her to suffer from PTSD for a while. Because of her dedication to her service, her relationship with her husband suffers, though they clearly care a lot about each other.
