South Korea has to have a strong army considering the dictatorship that is located directly beside them.
North Korea poses a constant threat to the free country of South Korea and as a result, the South Korean government has to make sure that they can defend themselves against military strikes. They have a mandatory conscription law, which means that everyone has to serve time. This has led to their army to grow rapidly and they have 1 million soldiers on active duty.
