The Italian Military has not really been heard from since the country lost World War Two while fighting with the Nazis.
This is because the country decided to downsize its military after their defeat, and put a lot of their defensive responsibilities in the hands of NATO. However, the Italians have been taking a more active role of late, sending troops to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, and leading the charge in rescuing African migrants crossing into Europe from Libya.
