Another controversy that came up regarding the parent and child parking spots had to do with the way that the spot was identified. The special parking spaces are usually distinguished by a painted figure of a parent holding the hand of a child
At one supermarket, people got upset that the parent symbol was depicted wearing a dress, when not all parents are women. So the supermarket painted over the skirt markings in order to make the image gender neutral. Not everyone was happy about this, either.
