The soldiers were seated around Denny, and so he decided to start up a conversation with the man nearest to him. “Where you heading?” he inquired. The soldier replied, “Petawawa. We’re going to be there for two weeks for some special training. And then after that, we’re going to be deployed in Afghanistan.” Denny had to let that information sink in for a moment.
He himself had never been a part of any military forces, and so he was always so overwhelmed with respect whenever he met someone who was. An hour or two after take-off, an announcement was made over the PA system, informing passengers that lunch would be served imminently. It was perfect timing too, as Denny was starting to feel hungry. Lunchtime!
