The researchers ended up diverting the water for five months as they went about their research. They believed that further rockslides could change American Falls forever and might even be enough to stop the water from flowing.
Drying up the waterfall meant they could map out the river and mark any faults or stresses in the rock. This could help to determine any future rockslides and the future of Niagara Falls. Amazingly, the team had to work around captivated tourists.
